Why does the English version of this template redirect to the Russian version?[edit]
Template: Template:Minpromtorg.gov.ru/en, isn't it supposed to go to an English text version? Tube of Light (talk) 16:06, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- There is no English version. Ruslik (talk) 19:57, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Ruslik0: then there probably should not be a Template:Minpromtorg.gov.ru/en until someone actually translates into English. - Jmabel ! talk 03:07, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Ruslik0 then why is there a link to an English version in the first place? It should either be deleted or someone should provide a Russian translation. Tube of Light (talk) 13:08, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Have I accurately attributed these images?[edit]
Hi there, I inadvertantly uploaded these images incorrectly to Wikimedia during the process of creating articles about these people (I'm new here, and learning), which is why the images were nominated for deletion. I think I have fixed the problem/s, but I'd be grateful if someone could take a look at them to see if I've attributed them properly:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MarekKowalkiewicz.jpg#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nicole_Sahin.png#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D
For context, the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf, and they have been granted permission to share them on Wikimedia by the photographer. The image were then forward to me to upload. I'd be grateful if someone could let me know if I'm doing things the right/wrong way. Cheers, and thank you. KWriteReturn (talk) 03:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- @KWriteReturn:
- You still have them marked as "own work", but you've now listed someone else as the photographer. That makes no sense.
- "the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf": on whose behalf?
- Permission "to share them on Wikimedia" is, sad to say, useless, at least for Commons. Per COM:L, Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain (these pretty clearly aren't) or where the copyright-holder has explicitly granted a "free license" such as a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license. Those aren't the only acceptable free licenses, but the license must allow for commercial use (which may, however, be limited by personality rights, trademark, or other non-copyright restrictions) and for the creation of derivative works.
- On last, this permission "to share them on Wikimedia" falls short on two counts. (1) There is no explicit license allowing commercial use and derivative works and (2) we have only your word for someone else granting a license.
- Other than the "own work" issue (which you can correct by accurately stating the source), the rest of this can be addressed by either of the following two approaches:
- Presuming the photographer is the copyright-holder, they can indicate the grant of license on any public-facing web page clearly under their own control (e.g. a website for their photography business; a Flickr page or something similar -- if they have a Flickr account, Flickr is well set up to allow a declaration of any of several different CC licenses; a publicly visible social media post; etc.) Basically, they can post the image, indicate that they are the photographer, and grant the permission. Sometimes it is useful for this purpose to create a page on a website that might even have no incoming links on the website, but where they provide the URL, and the domain is clearly under their control.
- The copyright-holder can send an overt declaration of a particular license as explained at COM:VRT. If the copyright-holder is someone other than the photographer, the VRT will also typically need a copy of the document that transferred copyright.
- I know this is a little complicated, but publishing a third party's work legally is inherently complicated. - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking the time to help me, @Jmabel; I really appreciate it. I have updated the sources of both photos, and have asked both photographers to complete the VRT Release Generator. I believe that Marvin Fox has already completed this for Marek Kowalkiewicz's image. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do. Once again, thank you! Using a photo from Commons[edit]
Hi there, someone changed the photo on my wikipedia page to a new photo. I would like to use the original photo. The original photo is still available in wikipedia commons. How do i change it back? - Hi Jeff. Thanks so much. I'm speaking about the English language page. I think it changed in 2022. But I would it like it to go back to the previous photo, which is me on a stage at the microphone. I think there are about 5 photos in Wiki Commons now -- would love the earlier version please. Thank you. If you could do it for me, or show me what to do I'd appreciate it. Thank you :) Biafra1966 (talk) 19:14, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Biafra1966 While you may get the photo changed to one that you like more, it is always possible, that it gets changed again by anyone. The best chances to have the from your point of view "ideal" photo in the article, is if you yourself provide a photo, that is better than the existing one's. Photos chosen for an article are mostly "portrait" photos that show the face in high resolution and as the main part of the photos. Also recent photos are often preferred over older one's. So you could arrange for a photo shooting, with the resulting photo in high quality, showing mostly your face and still showing that you are on a stage. It is likely that such a photo would then stay in the article. (people with a biography article about themselves are discouraged to edit "their" article. The exception are photos: You are welcome to upload as many photos of yourself on commons as you like, they only need to come with a free license and may need to get verified by VRT, if someone else is the photographer.) - @Biafra1966: Ah, the "stage" photo was added to the article in 2021 by a one-time contributor [1] and it was replaced with the "photo with the book" in 2022 by a regular contributor [2]. Both photos are good, but, beyond the fact that some people may prefer one photo or another, a problem with the "stage" photo is that it looks like it may be a copyright violation copied from this photo, at a 2019 event. So, without an authorization from the copyright owner, it probably cannot be kept anyway. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:54, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. This was so helpful. I'm happy to provide the photo using the guidelines you suggested. What's the easiest way to do that? The photo instructions are very confusing. Biafra1966 (talk) 01:24, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- I mean the wikipedia photo instructions are confusing, not your instructions. Sorry! I hope that makes sense, ha! :) Biafra1966 (talk) 01:25, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Biafra1966: The key thing is that the copyright-holder needs to provide a free license. It is simplest if the copyright-holder is also the uploader, but alternatively:
- They can post the picture and license to any Internet page clearly under their control (public-facing social media post, Flickr account, personal web site, etc.) and anyone can cite that as source and upload the image.
- They can go through the COM:VRT process.

- I work as a tour guide at the Museum of Local History named after T.A. Sulims of the Pecheneg settlement council. I took a short video about the museum on my phone (not the best quality, however). I would like to place it on the Wikipedia page that talks about our museum, or a link to it (hyperlink). Question. - Typically, the best way to upload a video is Commons:video2commons. It looks like the documentation is partially translated to Ukrainian at Commons:video2commons/uk.
- The most relevant category would be a category for the museum; you might look through Category:Videos for other possibly relevant additional categories.
- Do be careful about copyright. Typically much of what is in a museum is copyrighted. For example, your video may show other people's copyrighted photos, paintings, etc. If they are shown passingly without the camera lingering on them, that may be OK, but it could be enough to make your video into a derivative work. If so, Commons would require you to "clear" licenses for any copyrighted content significantly reproduced. - Jmabel ! talk 22:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

10" x 8" Studio Release Photograph in 1915[edit]
I bought an old photo (from Heritage Auctions) of Charlie Chaplin and Film Crew, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, for In the Park (General Film Company, 1915), 10" x 8" Studio Release Photograph. Can I upload the photo into Wikipedia "In The Park"? Baycuda (talk) 21:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

Incorrect on rights for certain images; unsure how to proceed[edit]
A recent perusal of my uploads made me realize some rights issues with some photos.
So, for context, John Prentice is my step-grandfather, and I uploaded the following images, but did not have the rights to them:
- File:John Prentice in San Francisco.jpg
- File:John Prentice in tuxedo.jpg
- File:John Prentice with camera.jpg
- File:John Prentice formal portrait.jpg
Not fully understanding copyright at the time, knowing I had my grandmother's permission to upload them, and considering I had "taken" the photos that were being uploaded (i.e. I had "scanned" them in with my phone), I thought this was okay. I now recognize that this was not correct, however. I don't think there is any way to verify her permission (she's not good with technology), so my inclination was to request they all be deleted (instead of trying to verify her permission), but I wasn't sure.
On top of this, I uploaded File:Robert Nemanich 2023.jpg on behalf of someone else; I had permission in this case, as well (I tried convincing the actual photographer to upload it themselves, but they asked me to do it for them, and for reasons I can't get into, a different set of issues would have arisen had I done the VRT verification route, so I thought, eh, no big deal), but I definitely should have known better. I can maybe see if in the future I can get the person to upload on Flickr or something so I can share it, but my main concern now is telling the truth and making it right.
I apologize for these mistakes. I've genuinely enjoyed contributing to Wikimedia these past many months, and I am incredibly sorry that I let the community down with my actions. My intent was always in good faith, but mistakes were made, nonetheless. I hope this can be rectified as soon as possible, in as best a way as possible, and that I can still contribute. Again, I am very sorry.
Thank you,

- @Packer1028: Hi, For the photos showing John Prentice, the first thing is to determine the photographer(s) and the copyright owner(s). The photos look like family photos but not like self-portraits by John Prentice. If your grandmother is the photographer or acquired the copyrights, she could, as Jeff G. suggests, sign an equivalent paper and you can send a copy to VRT. It may be prudent to first ask at the VRT noticeboard if they accept. If your grandmother is not the photographer or the copyright owner, she cannot issue a license. If other copyright owner(s) is (are) known, the solution can be to request a free license from them. If the photos can be kept, please correct the author, source and date statements in the description pages and remove the self template from the licenses. For the photo showing Robert Nemanich, if it is impossible in any way to get the copyright owner to validate the potential license, then the file should probably be nominated for deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:26, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you all for your help. I'll get on this ASAP. 99% certain my grandmother was the photographer for all JP photos. Try to see if I can salvage the other one. Packer1028 (talk) 05:27, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

- If you want to delete your older upload, you have to nominate it for deletion, just as if it had been uploaded by anyone else.
- If you want to change a filename, use the "move" tab above the image. If you have Filemover privileges, this will actually let you move it; if not, it will help you fill out a form for a move request. However, keep in mind that in almost every country in the world, at least since 1989 (and for many of them long before that), if something can be copyrighted then it is copyrighted by default. So unless this is something so simple that it cannot be copyrighted, it almost certainly is copyrighted, and unless the copyright-holder has granted a free license, we can't accept it here. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 30 May 2024 (UTC)

Faithful reproduction of a plate?[edit]
Hi, I recently uploaded File:Buah nanas pineapple plate.jpg but I'm not sure if there is copyright on the photo or not. I know that scans of 2D objects which are a faithful reproductions are not considered to have copyright. I'm just not sure if that applies to a ceramic plate or not! I would love some copyright advice. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 22:28, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Key "***" not found in stash when I want to upload an image, what to do? Tadmisha (talk) 11:36, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- Start the upload again. It is likely only a temporary problem of the server. If the same file always runs into this problem but other uploads are fine more investigation makes sense. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:00, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
assignment of copyrights[edit]
A photographer assigns the copyrights of a certain collection of their photos to a non-profit. Can the non-profit upload some of the assigned photos to wikipedia without the permission of the photographer? BBTIarchival (talk) 11:37, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- @BBTIarchival: Yes, but we will need a proof of copyright ownership by the organization. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Copyright transfers can only be in writing. Yann (talk) 14:06, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- In general, if the non-profit in question is well-enough known (something like Oxfam, or Mercy Corps, or a major symphony orchestra) and if they have claimed copyright and granted a license on their own site, we would usually assume good faith. But, otherwise, it is almost always a good idea to go through VRT to clarify that the copyrights were assigned (copy of assignment document) and that the uploader represents the non-profit (send email to VRT from the non-profit's domain, be able to respond to email there). - Jmabel ! talk 18:30, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
Regarding necessary supportive action to prevent deletion of protest images[edit]
You may find the details on this page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Move_Earth_to_new_Habitable_Zone. I am unsure how I am getting alerts of these image deletion requests on my email id since I have a different user account. I request you to kindly do the needful allowing us the necessary time and resources to retain the flagged images. Love's Labour Lost (talk) 14:37, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Love's Labour Lost: If it is certain that permission emails will be sent very soon to Wikimedia, someone can add the template Permission pending to the pages of the files. If not, and if the files are deleted, they can be restored after the permissions are received. For the email, maybe User:Move Earth to new Habitable Zone indicated your email in their account information. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:25, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
Frustrating[edit]
Today I uploaded a picture to Wikimedia Commons I took of myself in 1983 using a camera with a self-timer. The link: File:Helmut Sinor (1983).jpg
Now I received a message that something is still not correct. I can't get my head around it any more. Whatever I do, there's always something to criticize. Under https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Helmut_Sinor_(1983).jpg it currently says:
== == == == cc-by-4.0
I have absolutely no plan. What else do I have to do so that my photo is finally accepted?
Kind regards, Helmut Sinor (User: Chinnichap) Chinnichap (talk) 14:48, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Chinnichap: Hi, Some users nominate for speedy deletion photos that might or might not be self-portraits. In the page of the file, you can click on the button "Challenge speedy deletion". That will create a normal deletion discussion and you can tell the reason for why the photo can be kept. There is a similar situation with the 2018 photo and it is more urgent because the speedy deletion tag has been there for a longer time. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:52, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- The photo from 2018 was taken by my sister. If it gets deleted now, that's not so tragic. For now, I would like to bring the picture from 1983 through the thicket of regulations. That has priority now. As I'm in hospital next week, I can only take care of it until Sunday. After that, I won't be able to do anything to get the photo from 1983 accepted until June 10. Chinnichap (talk) 07:50, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Chinnichap: I've taken the first step for you. You can follow up at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Helmut Sinor (1983).jpg. Question: any connection to Chinn & Chapman? If not, that user name may be a problem. I believe it's probably a trademarked name. - Jmabel ! talk 18:37, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- I created this username years ago to familiarize myself a little with the possibilities. It was simply the first username that spontaneously came to mind. At that time, I had no intention of ever contributing to Wikipedia myself. If the problems are due to that, I could certainly change the username.
- Should I do this in the current situation or will it only make things more complicated? Chinnichap (talk) 07:42, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry we've ended up having this conversation in two places, but I would suggest you just stop using the Chinnichap account and stick to the one under your own name. - Jmabel ! talk 19:11, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
Use of images[edit]
Today I received (after asking of course) professional pictures of the person I wanted to write an article about. Now the person gave me permission to upload it on Wikipedia, but im not sure if he gave permission to upload it Wikimedia and make it available to everyone. What can I do in this case? Thank you BearThatRun (talk) 18:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- @BearThatRun: first, you need to find out who owns the copyright for the images. Typically that will not be the subject of the photo, unless it is a selfie: it will be the photographer. Assuming the copyright has not been transferred, and the photogrpapher still holds the copyright, there are basically two ways to go:
- The copyright-holder can post the image on a web page clearly under their control (their own web site, a public-facing social media post, their Flickr account, etc.) and indicate an appropriate free license that they are offering (I'd recommend either CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0). They can indicate a required attribution if they like, but the license they offer must allow (1) commercial reuse and (2) derivative works. Then anyone can cite that page for source/permission and upload the file to Commons.
- The copyright-holder can go through the process described at COM:VRT to send an email granting a free license (again, I'd recommend either CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0).
- If the copyright has been transferred, then really only the second option is viable, because they will need to provide a copy of the document that transferred copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 03:16, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello, is there a way to show more than 200 files on a category? Ideally, is there a way to show all files on a category? RodRabelo7 (talk) 19:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- All I'm aware of is (1) open it in VFC; (2) keep loading 100 at a time by going to the bottom; (3) ignore that VFC is supposed to be about making changes in the files: you can click on any that you want to see in a tab of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 03:21, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
Actor Image[edit]
While editing the article of American actor Brandon Butler I noticed his page didn't have an image. As such I found one from his Instagram profile that was not from any photoshoot. Instated it was a photo of himself post on his public profile thanking his followers for birthday wishes. I choose this image because it was clear from the context that it wasn't part of someone else's work and shared public. However it was recently flagged for deletion an non-compliant with copyright.
Is this not acceptable? If not could you give me an example of an image I can use? If it is what licensing should I add? John's Edits (talk) 13:20, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

Legit files from a blacklisted Flickr account[edit]
I uploaded two portraits with cc-by-2.0 license from Flickr (depicting a former Microsoft employee, who is now a famous author in Sweden) but the reviewer bot automatically rejected them because the account of the original uploader on Flickr, Microsoft Sweden, is blacklisted for "Copyrighted logos and stock images of Microsoft products." - Just to be clear before assuming anything "went wrong": did you upload with https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&campaign=wle-mt or with the regular Upload Wizard? If you did the former and your files didn't show up, you should let them know at Commons talk:Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Malta. If you did the latter, then of course nothing attached them to the contest.

- @Ooligan: I agree with the other comments that it is a very poor choice and uploaders should avoid using them, but to answer your precise question I have not found a Commons policy forbidding their use. Apparently, the file naming policy of Commons does not forbid it. And the renaming policy does not seem to allow renaming for that reason. The policy of the English-language Wikipedia forbids it in the titles of articles, but it's not Commons. Modifica figura[edit]
Glicitra (talk) 10:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Uploading studio photos that my grandmother left to me (dates: 1920-1960) & family photos she took[edit]
I inherited photos from my grandmother and mother that were taken between 1920-1980. The photos prior to 1953 were portraits taken at studios that are no longer existant. The photographers, too, are deceased. I also have photos taken by my mother and grandmother. They all have historical value for the fashions they wore which are very clear and representative of the eras in which the photos were taken. They also show in the background buildings and neighborhoods that were part of the Italian-American community in Brooklyn, NY and Wilmerding, PA during the same period (1920-1980).
The photos are of my grandmother, grandfather, mother and father. Everyone is deceased. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilyannfrances (talk • contribs) 16:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Since these photos belong to me I am willing to share them for knowledge and educational reasons. But how do I attribute them. They are not my own work and everyone whether studio or person is deceased.
Please advise as I am not clear in who to attribute them to.
Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilyannfrances (talk • contribs) 16:03, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Emilyannfrances: Hi, You can upload the photos that were taken by persons from whom you inherited the rights, for example if that is the case with your mother and your grandmother. The authorship of each photo is normally attributed to the person who took that photo, unless you want to keep their identities secret. If it's unclear which of them took a photo, you can explain that and name both. As copyright owner, you can license the photos with any free license of your choice, for example, but not necessarily, those listed in this category, unless a photo is in the public domain for some specific reason. The educational scope of some photos might be disputed, but that can be more easily evaluated after they are uploaded. You can probably not upload the studio portraits, unless you demonstrate that they are in the public domain for a specific reason or that you somehow acquired their copyrights. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. The photographs were not used for media, just taken at the request of the customers. There are no copyright symbols. By the age of some of the photographers I researched as part of my local history, they are dead for over 70 years. The studios closed. As far as I can determine, no descendant carried on the business. And then I have portraits taken by an unknown photographer in my grandparent's apartment. I could attribute to unknown photographer, taken in Mrs. Serrapede's apartment. Emilyannfrances (talk) 18:16, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- The studio photographs should be fine as long as there's no copyright notice on them. Although they are probably fine regardless. I think the educational value can be justified by the nature of them being historical studio photographs. There's a lot of information about the photographer, time period, and the history of photography in general from such works. Although like Asclepias says it's not like they can't be evaluated for educational value on a case-by-case basis after being uploaded. --Adamant1 (talk) 18:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I have checked some of the cardboard frames the photos came in. The studio name is on some. In which case I will credit the studio. Since these were in our community and some include the photographer's name I can check for date of death. To my knowledge the descendants moved on to other lines of business, but I'll check again. Most of the studios are closed long ago by end of 1950s. I think if I credit the studio then with an estimated date I'll be within conformance. No, there are no copyright marks on any of the photographer's labels or cardboard frames. 100.1.103.102 18:11, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Emilyannfrances: Under the pre-1979 U.S. copyright law, passing copies to your family probably counted as publication. If there was no copyright notice, then that is publication without notice, which at that time would have placed the images in the public domain.
