Reverse geocoding is determining the named location based on coordinates (latitude and longitude). It's used on Commons location of creation (P1071) in structured data and the location category. The goal is to add the most specific location of creation (P1071) to as many relevant files.

Preparing data[edit]

For the reverse geocoding to work, Wikidata and OpenStreetMap need to be update to date and interlinked. The most specific regions (often village, town or city) need to have relations on OpenStreetMap and these relations need to be interlinked with Wikidata items. Per country reports are available to track progress. This should be completed in a region for starting with the actual reverse geocoding

Finding images for reverse geocoding[edit]

A tracker category is added to files that do have coordinates, but no location of creation (P1071) so we know what to work on. In the future we might also want to refine the location, for example from a country to a city.

The actual reverse geocoding[edit]

Bots will be doing the actual reverse geocoding.
