10 Things All Mercedes-Benz Owners Should Know

Here are ten things that all Mercedes-Benz owners should know to keep their cars running longer, avoid headaches and save money.

1. Know what oil and filter to use.

Mercedes-Benz recommended oil interval is 10,000 miles. That is only true if you use the required oil and filter type. Oil used by Mercedes-Benz is Mobil1 0W40. Also, it would be best if you had a fleece oil filter that can continue to do its job for 10k miles. If you get a $29.99 oil special at your auto repair shop around the corner, it’s doubtful that you will get the required filter and Mobil1 oil. Be aware that if you do 10,000-mile oil changes but use oils not designed to protect your Mercedes-Benz engine for that long, you can cause serious engine problems such as sludge buildup and premature wear. We don’t recommend $29.99  oil specials for your Mercedes-Benz, but we recommend changing the oil more frequently if you insist. You don’t want your Mercedes-Benz engine to look like this M112 engine on an E320.

2. Know that the battery is one of the essential components in your car

Mercedes-Benz cars have state of the art equipment and electronics installed on them. That’s why they tend to be so sensitive regarding the battery voltage. Batteries over five years old may no longer hold the required charge and may not provide the required electricity. Even if your Mercedes-Benz may be starting fine in the morning, different systems and control units in your car could start to malfunction due to the age of the battery. You could get errors that initially don’t relate to the battery. A few common examples are: the SRS light illuminating your dashboard, the car going into limp mode randomly, or other error messages on your instrument cluster such as Electronic Consumers Switched off. Don’t wait until the car battery on your Mercedes-Benz is completely gone. Save yourself money by buying a replacement battery online for much less than you would at the dealer or auto parts stores. You can find batteries on Amazon at reasonable prices, even OEM Bosch Batteries for your Mercedes-Benz. Click here to see a few batteries that fit Mercedes-Benz cars.

3. Know why the check engine light is ON.

Just because the car is running fine doesn’t mean you should not worry about the Service Engine Light warning. If the check engine lights turn on while driving, don’t panic. You can troubleshoot your check engine light yourself. Stop by your local auto parts stores, such as AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts, and have them read the fault codes from your Mercedes-Benz. They will usually do this service for free. Auto parts stores will read the fault codes for free, but most have store policies and will not erase the fault code for you. The YOUCANIC Full System Scanner is one of the best scanners for your Mercedes-Benz.

The YOUCANIC full system diagnostic scanner can help troubleshoot Mercedes-Benz problems by reading and interpreting fault codes, performing diagnostic tests, and resetting maintenance reminders. It’s a powerful tool for DIY mechanics and professional technicians to diagnose and solve complex issues.

4. Know how to replace the windshield wipers yourself

Not only should you know how to replace the windshield wipers (which can be complicated on a Mercedes-Benz), but that the dealer is not the only place to buy windshield wipers for Mercedes-Benz. You may go to your local auto parts store and be told they don’t carry windshield wipers for your Mercedes-Benz. It’s a dealer-only item. Fortunately for you, you can save on those hard-to-find windshield wipers by ordering them from Amazon.

5. Know how to check the fluids on your Mercedes-Benz and what type of replacement fluids you need.

Be aware of the engine oil used and the oil filter installed. Know how to check the power steering fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, and windshield wiper fluid.

6. Know how to Synchronize Windows, Sunroof

After you replace the battery or your car battery dies, you will notice that the sunroof and the windows will no longer operate with one touch. The window or the sunroof only moves a few inches at a time. To fix this problem, you must re-synchronize the windows and the sunroof. You do this by moving the window up. Once the window gets to the up position, don’t release the switch but continue to press the window switch button for another 5 seconds until you hear a click. The same procedure should be followed on the sunroof.

7. Know how to check the engine oil level

Know how to check the oil on your Mercedes-Benz. In many models, you will have a dipstick that you can use to measure the oil. In some Mercedes-Benz, the dipstick was omitted. Since 2000, you can measure the engine oil level from your instrument cluster in Mercedes-Benz models. Read your owner’s manual for the specific instructions on your Mercedes-Benz model. If you don’t have an owner’s manual, you can download a free PDF copy here. Download the Mercedes-Benz owner’s manual. You should know how to jump-start your Mercedes-Benz following the procedures recommended by the manufacturer. If you ever have to jump-start your Mercedes-Benz in the future, keep those jumper cables or jump box connected for at least 10 minutes or more. If you can avoid jump-starting a Mercedes-Benz, that’s even better. The safest option would be to use a trickle charger to charge your battery and slowly bring it to regular operation. If you have the time, connect a 12 Volt Battery Trickle Charger to your battery and let it charge for a few hours.

9. Know how expensive replacement keys are.

The keys on your MB are costly to replace. The replacement keys can range from $300 to $500 US dollars. It is wise to place a protective case on your keyfob just like you do with your smartphone. You will find lots of Silicone Smart Keyfob covers for Mercedes-Benz on Amazon. If the buttons on your keyfob are already worn out, you can replace just the shell and save your key. Check out these replacement shells for Mercedes-Benz smart key.

10. Know how to find a good mechanic.

Ask your friends and relatives for suggestions, or you can read online reviews. You don’t want to pick a mechanic at random—your car is an expensive investment, and you want to be sure it’s in the right hands.

I hope these ten things will help you maintain your Mercedes-Benz and save you money and headaches. Keeping up maintenance on your Mercedes-Benz is very important to avoid large repair bills in the future. Don’t forget to put a roadside emergency kit in your car’s trunk so you have everything you need if your car breaks down and you can’t immediately find help.
