I changed the remote batteries after pulling fuse F48 and relay K31. I then replaced the fuses, but the remote no longer works.

Yes it is very likely that you have a short. I would check for shorts and continuity at the rear tail lights. Also make sure there is no accidental contact between the tail light circuit and any metal parts. Get a multimeter and start testing back there. Compare both sides because it is most likely it is just one of the tail lights that is causing the problem.

Thank you for such an informative article. I have a ml350 w 163. The issue is that when you turn on the parking lamp, the bulb does not light up. So when you are driving at night, there is no light until you puch on the brake. I have checked all the fuses under the hood (F25/F1/F15/F24/F12) as well as the physical bulbs that are in the parking lamp socket, which are all working. I am convinced there was some sort of short specifically in that socket where the pocket lamp is. Would you have any suggestions please?
