DIY How to replace transmission mount Mercedes-Benz

Introduction

If you have been experiencing vibration inside the cabin of your Mercedes-Benz, then your engine or transmission mounts may have failed. Typically the vibrations are worse at idle and may be less noticeable when driving. This repair guide will show you how to replace the automatic transmission mount. Replacing the transmission mount is easy; you can change it in less than an hour. When it comes to motor mounts, do not replace them with used parts.

The transmission mount in a Mercedes-Benz is an essential component that helps to secure and support the transmission. Over time, due to wear and tear, the transmission mount may become damaged or worn out, leading to several issues, such as excessive vibration, transmission misalignment, and even damage to other components.

Replacing the transmission mount in a Mercedes-Benz can help restore the vehicle’s smooth operation and improve driving comfort. The process typically involves removing and replacing the old mount with a new one.

The rubber will lose elasticity over the years, transmitting the vibration from the transmission to the chassis and the cabin.

Instructions

Replacing the transmission mount on a Mercedes-Benz can be a fairly involved process, so it’s important to have the right tools and follow the correct procedure. Here are the steps you should follow:

  1. Safety First: Before beginning any work on your vehicle, make sure it is parked on a level surface, with the engine turned off and the parking brake engaged. Wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection.
  2. Raise the vehicle using the jack that came with your car, or even better, use an aluminum jack. Make sure to secure the car by placing jack stands underneath. No, not work under a car unsupported by jack stands. The other option would be to use vehicle ramps. jack stands
  3. Access the mount: Locate the transmission mount, typically near the center of the car’s undercarriage, between the transmission and the vehicle’s chassis. Removing the vehicle’s undercarriage shield or other components may be necessary to access the mount.
  4. Remove the mount: Use a wrench or socket to remove the bolts securing the mount to the transmission and chassis. Once the bolts are removed, carefully lift the mount out of its position.
  5. Inspect the mount: Examine the old mount for signs of damage, such as cracks or excessive wear. If the mount appears damaged or worn, replace it with a new one.
  6. Install the new mount: Carefully place the new mount into position, aligning the bolt holes with those on the transmission and chassis. Replace the bolts and tighten them securely.
  7. Test the new mount: After the new mount is installed, start the engine and test the vehicle’s shifting and acceleration to ensure the mount is functioning properly.
  8. Clean up and replace components: Reinstall any removed components to access the mount, such as the undercarriage shield or other parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of a failed Engine or Transmission Mount?

The #1 symptom of a failed transmission mount is vibration in your seat and cabin.

Other symptoms include:

  • Excessive engine and transmission movement when changing gears.
  • Noise or thump when you place the engine in gear.
  • Vibration at idle or when accelerating.

How often should I change the engine or transmission mounts?

The engine and transmission mounts are not part of regular maintenance, meaning they typically don’t need to be checked or replaced regularly. With that said, Mercedes-Benz engine and transmission mounts seem to fail between 80,000 and 120,000 miles. That’s when most owners start experiencing the vibrations on the steering wheel, inside the cabin, or on their seat, with the vibrations being the most noticeable when stopped at a light.

Should I replace the engine mounts at the same time as replacing the transmission mount?

If you feel the vibration in your seat, steering wheel, or cabin, replace the two engine mounts and the transmission mount. You may replace the defective one, but the other mounts will not last long if left in place.

How long does it take to replace the engine/transmission mounts?

An experienced mechanic should be able to do the job in less than 2 hours. Suppose any mechanic charges more than 3 hours of labor to replace the two engine mounts and one transmission mount; they take too long. If you do it yourself for the first time, give yourself 4 or 5 hours.

Replacing the transmission mount only can be done in 20 minutes by an experienced mechanic familiar with Mercedes-Benz cars even though you will most likely get charged for one hour of labor.  First-time Do It Yourself; it can take up to one hour.
