Introduction

The instrument cluster on the W211 E-Class, 2003-2009, is known to fail and can exhibit problems such as the cluster lights going out or burning LEDs. Unfortunately, while experienced professionals, most mechanics can repair the cluster, will not be able to fix the cluster for the E-Class. If taken to the Mercedes-Benz dealer, a new cluster will be installed, which costs between $900-$1200. When a new cluster is installed, it will need SCN coding. If the cluster is replaced with a used cluster from another Mercedes-Benz, then the miles will no longer show on the instrument cluster. You will only see dashed lines in the cluster.

How to remove the cluster from a Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 2003-2009

Step 1

Removing the instrument cluster from the E-Class takes only a few minutes. You will need to have the right set of tools, though. There are 4 Torx bolts that you will need to remove, and you will need a Set of T6-T25 L-Wrenches.

Step 2

Move the steering wheel as far out and lower it as much as possible. You can do this using the steering wheel lever on the steering column.

Step 3

Disconnect the battery. The main battery of the E-Class is located in the trunk. Make sure you disconnect the battery and turn the ignition off before proceeding with the cluster removal.

Step 4

Grab the frame of the instrument cluster with your finger and pull it out. You may use a Dashboard Trim removal kit but avoid using a screwdriver as you can damage the plastic frame.

Step 5

Remove the four bolts around the cluster using the L-shaped wrench from the Torx Set T6-T25.

Step 6

Pull the cluster out until you see the electrical harness connecting the instrument cluster. Unplug the connector and completely remove the instrument cluster. Reinstall in reverse order.

The gears on the original speedometer pointer wheel will not turn.
