Replace License Plate Light Bulbs on a Mercedes Benz with Blue or OEM

Burned license plate light?  Or are you looking to replace them with blue lights? Here is a guide allowing you to replace the bulbs and NOT get the error message Lights Defective or License Plate Light Defective.  This is a very easy task; if you have used a screwdriver before, you can replace these bulbs on your own.

Needed:

Applications

  • E Class (1998-2007)
  • C Class (1998-2007)
  • CLK Class (1998-2007)

Note:

  • Do NOT replace it with an LED bulb or you will continue to get error messages on your instrument cluster. You can use colored bulbs, but they should not be LEDs. The only way to correctly add LED bulbs is to add a resistor.
  • We recommend replacing both bulbs at the same time. Light bulbs have work hours, and the other bulb will likely burn out soon.

REPAIR STEPS

  1. Open the trunk. Not necessary, but it will be easier for you to work on.
  2. Remove the two screws as shown in the picture.

  3. Use a flat screwdriver to pry out the plastic bulb housing. Once you remove the bulbs, it comes right out.

  4. Replace the old light bulb with the new one. The bulb sits on the housing, as shown in the picture. You may have to pry it out a little since it is tight.

  5. Snap the bulb and the housing back in. If it doesn’t fit properly, rotate the housing 180 degrees.
  6. Put the two screws back in. Be careful not to over-tighten them.

We recommend replacing both bulbs simultaneously if you have a spare.

That is it; you are done!
